Zuzanna Srebrna

Axis mundi

In the project entitled Axis mundi Zuzanna Srebrna combines experiences gained working on creating set designs, sculptures, and installations. She constructs a space for encountering others, nature, and oneself with the use of natural materials, light and sound, and by connecting points with stretching and bending lines, pushing the space apart.

Because man is an integral part of geometry, his dynamic movement alters the artist’s composition, organizes its architecture, and changes the centre of gravity within the structure, frames it.

The analogy between the human body and architecture originates in the artist’s sculptural and scenography practices and the way she oscillates between these two fields and pushes their boundaries. We can see her ability to communicate with others through the use of space. The artist invites us into this world she created, encourages us to communicate and reflect on the nature of the universe.

Srebrna’s contemplative space is almost temple-like, the atmosphere she creates opens up the body and the mind. In the form of a cave or cocoon, we can return to our original activities – play and breath. Srebrna's works are microcosms through which we can return to our own inner beings.

The title of the exhibition, referring to the idea of the centre of the world, redirects our attention to the space-time continuum. What is duration in time and in space? When can we speak of continuity in time  is it only when a human being is present in space? The idea of the cosmic axis was used to meet with the past, present, and future. What is the contemporary form of the Axis mundi? What can delineate the individual centre of the world today?
