residency: April 2018–April 2019

Kem (Poland)

Kem is an independent group oriented towards new methods and strategies of choreography as well as performance; interests of the collective oscillate around queer studies as well as feminist and queer ecology. The group was invited to take part in an artistic residency as part of the performative program of the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art for the entire year – from April 2018 to April 2019. They will realize the Three Springs project in the Workspace – a new space in one of the Castle’s towers.

Inviting the Kem collective to collaborate with the institution is not only a continuation of U–jazdowski’s performative interests, but also an attempt for the institution to look at itself – at the programme, internal mechanisms and relationships – from a different perspective. The project is about creating an idiosyncratic hospitality: sharing the place, interests and methodology of work, but above all, crossing the mutual limitations that stem from the various ways of organizing public institutions and informal artistic groups.

What exactly does an artistic residence mean and the specific living situation associated with it? How can a public institution, with a clearly defined structure and profile, be transformed and become more open to uncommon artistic formats? Spring by Kem, which will occur three times – during the summer, autumn, and winter – is a metaphor for a beginning, growth, and vitality. Full of new energy, we want to utilize this time to create an unprecedented meeting space with the viewer.
