The Border Fence

directed by Nikolaus Geyrhalter, Austria 2018, 112' (English friendly)

Tyrol, 2016, the Brenner Pass on the border between Austria and Italy. The construction of a wall separating these two neighboring countries is set to begin soon. After the closure of the so-called Balkan route, the Austrian authorities are predicting that this is where they will see an increased influx of refugees. Nikolaus Geyrhalter, one of the most acclaimed contemporary documentary filmmakers, conducts numerous conversations with the inhabitants of the border region to create a complex portrait of local identity. As in Geyrhalter’s other films, his field of interest is the topography of the place, which is filmed in long, sterile, and extraordinarily precise shots: roadside bars, railway sidings, trestles, and breathtaking mountains.
