Parallel Mothers
[Madres paralelas], directed by Pedro Almodóvar, Spain 2021, 120'
Pedro Almodovar’s latest film, starring the winner of the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival Penélope Cruz, is a declaration of faith in female power, solidarity and courage. Tender yet spontaneous, warm yet not without dramatic twists, full of hope that comes after painful losses, Parallel Mothers portrays life in all its shades. The heroines, Janis (Cruz) and Ana (Milena Smit), meet in the maternity ward. The former is a mature woman, the latter until very recently was just a teenager. Both are single and facing single motherhood. Janis knows she will make it, but Ana is full of fear. It seems their paths will barely cross, however, they will create a bond as strong as the umbilical cord. As is often the case with Almodóvar, a coincidence can become destiny and the family of choice is the one to offer unconditional acceptance and love.
