Nadja
directed by Michael Almereyda, USA 1994, 93'
Nadja has just lost her father, who happened to be a famous citizen of Transylvania. Nevertheless, she does not want to benefit from his legacy. She arrives in New York and wanders alone through Manhattan’s maze of streets and nightspots. Will casual acquaintances and brief romances become a starting point for the true intimacy that Nadja longs for so much?
Nadja hypnotises with its dark, oneiric atmosphere and a dose of decadence and existential dread. After the film’s release, its producer David Lynch (who also appears in a cameo role) called Michael Almareyda one of the best new wave directors.
