Smoke Sauna Sisterhood

[Savvusanna sõsarad], directed by Anna Hints, Estonia / France / Iceland 2023, 89'

A story about the power of sisterhood, the beauty of all bodies and the cleansing power of saunas.

An Estonian candidate for an Oscar and the European Film Awards that takes the audience on a journey into the depths of a life-giving forest. There, a group of women gather in a traditional sauna to relax, sing and cook together, but more importantly, to share their deepest secrets, thoughts and draw strength from togetherness. In the warm, intimate space, they let go of their fears and shame, regaining life energy. Shot over eight years, this universal story also depicts the phenomenon of Estonia’s smoke sauna, listed by UNESCO.

Spontaneous and beloved by audiences, the filmmaker Anna Hints won the Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
