Kris (Hannah Einbinder), a young and talented director, lands the opportunity of a lifetime from a film studio: she is to remake the cult horror franchise Camp Miasma, which enjoyed immense popularity in the 1980s and 90s. Seeking inspiration, she meets with Billy (Gillian Anderson), the star of the original films. The visit to the eccentric actress quickly evolves into something far more than a standard interview. Although Shoenbrun’s film centers on the making of a fictional horror franchise, it is not a horror movie itself; rather, it merely draws upon that genre’s aesthetic.
It is a visually stunning feast for cinephiles—a story primarily about an unbounded love for cinema and how that love transforms our lives.
