How do we give a voice to those whose history has been erased from official memory? How can painting, installation, and drawing be used to talk about exclusion and the search for identity? We will discuss these questions during an in-person talk with Krzysztof Gil as part of the {Live} series on September 9th.
- Krzysztof Gil is a visual artist, PhD in Fine Arts, and lecturer at the Faculty of Art at the Pedagogical University of Krakow. His artistic practice encompasses drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and installation.
- Gil’s work touches upon themes of oblivion, stigmatization, and exclusion in Roma history. The artist critically reflects on the mechanisms of historical dominance, examining the relationship between collective memory and identity. Utilizing historical and personal iconography, he challenges hegemonic modes of storytelling and proposes new ways for minority groups to reclaim their agency.
- In 2016, he was awarded the Creative Scholarship of the City of Krakow. He has presented his work in numerous institutions in Poland and abroad, including the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC) and the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, l'étrangère in London, the Museum of Modern Art and the Stefan Gierowski Foundation in Warsaw, Arsenal Gallery in Białystok, the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź, Gdańsk City Gallery, BWA Wrocław, MWW Wrocław Contemporary Museum, BWA Tarnów, and the Szara Kamienica Gallery in Krakow.

- The events will be recorded for archival purposes, and the recordings will be made available online through the Mediateka.
- In times of tensions and crises, thinking and talking together about contemporary art – which responds to today’s challenges in unconventional ways – helps strengthen social resilience. Art is not only the object – just as important are the process, the thinking, the emotions, and the relationships that accompany it. The meetings offer a closer look at how art is created and, most importantly, who creates it.
- The events will be recorded for archival purposes, and the recordings will be made available online through the Mediateka.
- The meetings are open to everyone, from people working professionally in culture and art, to those who are curious about artists and their work, or simply want to talk about art.
