Marta Kwiatek

How does screen printing work, and what can happen when a printing technique becomes a tool for collaboration, participation and re-use? Join us for the next meeting in the Live series at Workspace — this time with Marta Kwiatek, an artist working in screen printing, lecturer and co-founder of Kwiaciarnia Grafiki. Na żywo is a series of meetings with artists that explores their practices, ways of working and what happens beyond the finished artwork.
- Marta Kwiatek works with screen printing and runs the Screen Printing and Drawing Studio at the School of Form at SWPS University in Warsaw, where she teaches the technique to emerging artists and future designers. For over a decade, she has also co-run Kwiaciarnia Grafiki — a space dedicated to promoting screen-printing culture and democratising access to art. The initiative develops original projects, while collaboration with other artists and collective experimentation with the printing process are equally important to its practice.
During the meeting, Marta will talk about her series Mineral Species as the First and Final Inhabitants of the Earth. After the presentation, she will invite participants to take part in a live screen-printing session. Bring along a light-coloured T-shirt or other light-coloured textile that you would like to print on — the ink will be black. Together, we will print a stone pattern onto your chosen textile. Screen printing is also a great way to give a new lease of life to clothes that have been sitting at the back of your wardrobe. A fresh layer of ink can give them a second life. Don’t buy new — recycle!
- Collaboration, participation and re-use are central to Marta Kwiatek’s practice. Earlier, as part of the Kwiatuchi duo, she developed socially engaged art projects in which plants were the primary medium. Kwiatuchi were among the pioneers of guerrilla gardening in Poland.
During the meeting, we will talk about screen printing as both an artistic technique and a tool for working with others, about the experience of Kwiaciarnia Grafiki, and about practices that bring together art, design and social engagement. We will also discuss working with space, plants and materials, and how artistic practice can move beyond the traditionally understood studio and gallery.
- Marta Kwiatek is a winner or finalist of, among others, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, Polish Graphic Design, Jasnowidze, the BMW/URBA/TRANSFORMY competition and the Aktivista Roku award. Her work and projects have been presented at, among others, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, BWA Wrocław, BWA Zielona Góra, AdHoc Gallery, Łódź Design Festival and Torino Graphic Days.

- Every week, we meet live with artists to talk about art: creative processes, works, and current experiences.
  - We host both artists who have previously taken part in Ujazdowski Castle’s programme and those making their debut. In this series, we would like to focus on individual approaches and artistic practices.

- The events will be recorded for archival purposes, and the recordings will be made available online through the Mediateka.
  - In times of tensions and crises, thinking and talking together about contemporary art – which responds to today’s challenges in unconventional ways – helps strengthen social resilience. Art is not only the object – just as important are the process, the thinking, the emotions, and the relationships that accompany it. The meetings offer a closer look at how art is created and, most importantly, who creates it.
The meetings are open to everyone, from people working professionally in culture and art, to those who are curious about artists and their work, or simply want to talk about art.
