Stanisław Brach
Aftermath
“Everything comes from earth and eventually everything returns to earth” – these are the words of the ancient Greek philosopher of the pre-Socratic period, Xenophanes. However, despite being coined at the dawn of our culture, the idea seems close to Stanisław Brach, who uses various treasures excavated from the earth in his works. For centuries, we have been using clay to make bricks, sand has been used to make glass and lapis lazuli is the basis for a dye used by painters to give their works an unusual color. It is similar in the case of Brach’s works – he has created everything from earth. In his artistic activities, which refer to land art, we see an extraordinary ecological sensitivity. Brach’s use of nature’s fruits is related to his need to be outside the city, in a place where he makes sculptures, ceramics and installations from bee hives. The Po_kłosie [Aftermath] exhibition is yet another manifestation of the artist’s passion and an expression of his love for nature. To paraphrase Xenophanes: for Brach, everything that comes from an ear of wheat, is art.
