Lukas De Clerck

Telescopic Aulos of Atlas
  • Lukas De Clerck will present his research-based artistic project Telescopic Aulos of Atlas. The aulos is an ancient Greek instrument, also present in the Roman Empire, characterized by a double reed. As such, it disappeared from European musical practice more than a thousand years ago; however, De Clerck carried out extensive research aimed at reconstructing it on the basis of available archaeological, iconographic, and textual data. Combining this knowledge with contemporary organology, he created an instrument offering wide possibilities in the context of contemporary music, especially post-minimalist and microtonal. As a double reed, the artist treats two oscillators in which the sound is modulated organically. In this way, his telescopic aulos also enables the exploration of phenomena related to psychoacoustics.
