Space Transformation Study
Catherine Lamb
-
On 04 July, Catherine Lamb will perform her composition Space Transformation Study at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art.
- This title refers to a family of pieces for porous spaces ausing the Secondary Rainbow synthesiser, developed by Lamb together with Bryan Eubanks. The instrument filters in real time the sounds coming from outside the porous spaces, treating them as compositional material that undergoes a kind of doubling: the audience experiences them both directly from the surrounding environment and in a transformed version projected through loudspeakers.
- In Catherine Lamb’s music, the mathematics of harmony are explored through the physicality of the material world. Her compositions give voice to the crystalline architectures of harmonic series through subtle frictions, pressures, and breaths that shape the way idealised harmonies resonate with us. The musical forms she constructs connect the sonic with the tactile and the visual, rendering transparent what once seemed opaque – transforming body into bone, moving from shadow into light. These dualities and metaphors reflect Lamb’s deep interest in the fundamental nature of sound.
