Monika Chlebek

Nie-zapamiętanie

The exhibition No-memorization mainly presents Monika Chlebeks latest works. Many of the works, which were specifically created for this show, open a new path in her art. Topics that have been accompanying the artist over the past few years, such as: corrupt innocence, fears lurking in the nursery as well as the anxiety ridden transition from a girl into a woman, which she evolved in the series Bad Dreams and Ants Hidden Under Clothes, are now considered by the artist as a concluded stage. Monika Chlebek begins a search on the borederland: between imperfect memory, imagination, and the space of emotional strain. Monika Chlebek creates images and collages reminiscent of horror movies; a whole class converted into horned, faceless figures; a bear accompanying two children, which is known by the regulars of Krupówki Street in Zakopane, is as comical as he is disturbing; flowers on faces bring to mind rashes rather than thoughts of bloom. The artist moves across different levels of internal tension and fear. Notwithstanding, she is not going overboard with perturbation, she doesnt create paranoid visions, but rather, by keeping distance, she is creating space for a history with deeper meaning, which mopes around between the images. That is why this no-memorization, meaning Monika Chlebeks works, are all the more convincing.

The exhibition No-memorization in the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art allows an insight into Monika Chlebeks work during one of the most intense periods in her career. In November, concurrently with the artists show at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, her work will also be presented at the Wizytująca Gallery in Warsaw as well as throughout the duration of the competition exhibition 41. Painting Biennale Bielska Jesień 2013.
