Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz Marginalia filozoficzne
Edited by Bohdan Michalski, Paweł Polit
This publication explores previously unknown forms of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz's creative activity, presenting notes and drawings he made in the 1930s in the margins of philosophical books he read. In Witkacy's marginal notes, commentaries on the text he was studying, sometimes very witty, are interwoven with personal notes; drawings made on the edges of the pages, sometimes serving as illustrations, evoke motifs familiar from his paintings.
Witkacy's philosophical marginal notes have been preserved on the pages of over thirty books currently held in the collections of the Library of the Institute of Philosophy, University of Warsaw. They constitute an exceptionally valuable document of Witkiewicz's intellectual pursuits and passions before the outbreak of World War II, a period when he was engaged not only in art and literature but also in the creation of his principal philosophical works. The catalogue contains reproductions of marginalia pages, preserved scores and contemporary recordings of musical works (CD, pieces performed by Maciej Grzybowski) published for the first time.
