Warsaw Water Stations
Warsaw Water Stations was realised during a residency of Michael Meier and Christoph Franz at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in 2015 as part of Learning from Warsaw project.
Michael Meier and Christoph Franz have been working since 2009 as an artist duo. They live and work in Zurich. In 2012, they received the Promotion Prize of the Canton of Zurich and Kiefer Hablitzel Prize and in 2013, the Nationale Suisse Art Prize.
Places and the social, historical and political forces that shape them are the starting point for most of their works. In thorough processes of research, the duo appropriate these places and refer to them with temporary installations ranging between sculpture, architecture and image.
The city of Warsaw sits atop reserves of water trapped about 200 metres underground in rock laid down in the Oligocene period. In the early 1990s, nearly a hundred Oligocene well houses were built and became an important element of the urban infrastructure in many districts of Warsaw. The artists documented the process of disappearance of this local phenomenon.
