Architecture and social space – The Ecology of Work

Promotion of the publication The Dark Side of the Castle. The Castle Through the Eyes of its users and the Role of Architecture in the Conflict Umschichten (Lukasz Lendzinski, Peter Weigand, Alper Kazokoglu). Presentation of the workshops organised in frames of European project GALA The Ecology of Work in cultural institution, Sholeh Johnston, Julie’s Bicycle and Hilary Jennings, Happy Museum.
- In autumn 2013, Lukas Lendzinski, Peter Wiegand and Alper Kazokoglu, members of Studio Umschichten, a Stuttgart-based architecture collective, during their residency at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art created a publication The Dark Side of the Castle. The Castle Through the Eyes of its users and the Role of Architecture in the Conflict which is first attempt to CCA self-reflection.
- In their practice, Studio Umschichten explore the relationship between architecture and social space. Their projects are usually site-specific and informed by interviews that the architects conduct to diagnose the needs or issues of their host institutions. Then this architectural ‘special unit’ comes up with potential remedies, whether social or spatial. Those are usually facetious projects, rooted in childish spontaneity and imaginativeness, executed in a tongue-in-cheek manner, yet highly apt in their diagnosis of the given situation. Umschichten’s working methods stand apart from the usual modes of architectural research; in Warsaw, they met with CCA staff members, conducted interviews, talked and let others talk and tell their stories. To collaborate on the Warsaw project, Umschichten invited local draughtsman, Tymon Jezierski, who has illustrated the various issues experienced by the CCA team.
- This publication is a first attempt to CCA self-reflection, which have its continuation in the form of the workshops and public meeting devoted to the ecology of work.
- The workshop will be facilitated by Sholeh Johnston from Julie’s Bicycle, who has been working together with Happy Museum on a Happy Museum Project. Both UK-based organisations that have been working at the forefront of wellbeing and sustainability in the arts and culture.
