- Joe Gardner is a middle school music teacher who gets the chance to play in the best jazz club in New York. But one imprudent step takes him off the street and straight to the “Great Before”, an extraordinary place where new souls get personalities, quirks, and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to get his old life back, Joe befriends a young soul called 22, who sees no point in being human. While trying to convince 22 of the beauty of life, Joe finds answers to his own questions.
