Obieg No. 4: The Way We Perform Now

Edited by Joanna Zielińska and Agnieszka Sosnowska

  • The fourth issue of online magazine Obieg  whose editors are performance analysts and Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art curators Agnieszka Sosnowska and Joanna Zielińska  covers performance in the context of contemporary artistic praxis.

    • Over the last few decades, relational artists have arrived on the scene and with them, the definition of performance has changed. Authors of this issue are interested in the dialectics of performance as a medium, against the backdrop of new technologies and the transformations occurring in the practices of artists due to the impact of live art being presented in gallery spaces. Within these parameters, they want to examine the changes taking place in the traditional exhibition format, which has of late taken a back seat in favour of hybrid forms that link the visual arts with the performative arts, literature, and music. They reflect on the changing role of the viewer, who ever more frequently has become a performer and active participant. They also analyze the role of the performers body and the work that is involved in extended performative exhibitions.

  • The issue is structured around two main themes. The first is related to exploring the local history of the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, with its rich tradition of experimentation at the interface of the visual arts and theatre. This is covered by texts directly discussing the activities of the Movement Academy  the theatre-and-art group that inaugurated the tradition of a “performative institution at the CCA. They also discuss performative exhibition and the practice of transforming the environs of the institution. In the park surrounding the Ujazdowski Castle, there have been interventions by such renowned artists as Jenny Holzer, Lawrence Weiner, and Tadashi Kawamata.

    • The second theme covers worldwide performative developments in the visual arts and examines their consequences for art institutions, as well as artistic and curatorial practices. Authors' scrutiny involves the broad notion of the “performer body, viewed not only as an individual entity but also as a group subject, or indeed a social phenomenon, in the context of developing countries. “Performing oneself, virtual-reality Afterlife, the phenomenon of oral literature, performing animals, the performance art resistance  these are some of the topics to be found in the June edition of Obieg.

  • Invited authors include the researchers and curators: Claire Bishop, Anka Herbut, Zofia Krawiec, Claire Tancons, Christina Fornaciari, Yann Chateigné, David Maroto, Ewa Tatar, as well as, the artists: Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Ivo Dimchev, Laura Lima, Helga Wretman.
