Mirna Bamieh

Cooking has become central to the artistic practice of Mirna Bamieh, an artist from East Jerusalem. By collecting old recipes and cooking, Bamieh fosters a sense of community and helps restore the collective memory of local Palestinian communities. During her two residencies in Poland, she focused on fermentation, which in her work becomes a metaphor for life itself: birth, connection, sharing, and death. During this time, she wrote six short stories accompanied by recipes, in which intimate episodes from her life are interwoven with vivid, sensorial descriptions of reality. She approaches her subject from a female perspective, filtering it through her sensitivity and emotional awareness, as well as her attentiveness to the tastes and smells of childhood, and to the tenderness and warmth of human relationships.
