Bohaternik is a story summarizing Bohaternia – a project that focused on the widely understood figure of the hero/heroine in children's literature. The project was carried out at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art from March to December 2020.
In Bohaternia, literary figures have become an impulse to reflect on human emotions, character traits and motivations. The project was an attempt to develop a new perspective on the archetype of the hero/heroine and break the patterns of thinking about heroism.
Who is a real hero/heroine? What do we admire people for? What must we do to become a hero/heroine? The little, great heroine of the book, Nina, attempts to answer these questions against a rich background of art, ukulele music, and spaghetti.
An ode to everyday heroism, Bohaternik is a warm and edifying story strengthening the sense of agency and confidence in children. It is a great excuse to discuss values, tolerance and compassion, but also to appreciate the small gestures that can change the world.
Daria Solak, an exceptional illustrator, was invited to create the visuals for the book.
