Other Dances.
Performance Turn in Polish Art of Twenty-First Century

  • Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art invites to a discussion entitled Performance Turn in Polish Art of Twenty-First Century  accompanying the premiere of a book edited by Agnieszka Sosnowska which summarises her illustrious exhibition Other Dances presented in 2018.
    • The contemporary performance turn came to Western Europe a little earlier than it did to Poland in the mid-1990s and it is often referred to as the ‛new or ‛second turn, so as to differentiate it temporally from (and also mark its direct relation to) the change of the paradigm in art that took place at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. Some researchers associate it mainly with the influence of experimental choreography on the changes in thinking about the relationship between visual or performing arts and music, even referring to it as choreographic. What is the performance turn in contemporary art in Poland? An unequivocal answer is not easy to arrive at. Rather than attempt to formulate a coherent definition, it seems more interesting to take a closer look at the actual artistic praxis.
