ReDirecting: East 2014

Re–Directing: East is a new project of the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, which draws attention towards regions that hitherto have rarely been present in artists residency programs: Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries.

In the past, the complex geopolitical situation of the region was not conducive to establishing relationships, not only with the more distant western part of Europe, but even between countries that border one another. Re–Directing: East, which has began in June of 2013, aims to build new spaces for dialogue and exploration. The curators, artists, as well as other professionals in the field of contemporary art that are invited to Warsaw, will contribute to the creation of communication networks and the exchange of knowledge as well as experience between remote worlds. Warsaw, due to its historical experience and geographic location, is an ideal place for such a meeting.

Re–Directing: East Conversations is a series of public talks given by the most interesting representatives of young generation of curators and art organisers from the region explored in frames of the project. The participants of the month long residency will share their knowledge and experience gathered as a result of organising art projects which aim to re-define the sphere of publicness in cities such as Dushanbe, Tbilisi, Minsk, Teheran, and beyond.

In the current edition of the project, in June 2014, the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art host curators as well as other cultural practitioners active in the area of culture: Amanda Abi Khalil (Lebanon), Amirali Ghassemi (Iran), Faruh Kuziev (Tajikistan), Nini Palavandishvili (Georgia) and Lena Prents (Belarus).

Re–Directing: East project is realised thanks to the financial support of the City of Warsaw.
