Anna Molska
Tanagram
The characters in Anna Molska’s Tanagram – athletic models in helmets and
pads – arrange black blocks resembling scaled Chinese tangram puzzles on
a white floor. One of the first figures arranged is a black square, evoking
associations with the work of Kazimir Malevich. In addition to this allusion to
Suprematism, the work includes references to avant-garde Russian theatre
scenography, Alexandrov Ensemble songs, and quotes from a Russian-language textbook. The work can be read as a commentary on utopian art projects that were supposed to introduce order and tame chaos.
